Grocery Shopping Tips for 2020

In the wake of Covid-19, more of us are trying to stay home. However, with that comes a few difficulties. We can no longer take for granted easy tasks such as grocery shopping. Yet, the world is changing with us. Now, more than ever, we have options that can help bring groceries right to our doors. What’s more, is that it even includes local food as well. So, whether you are looking to shop in-store, pickup, or use delivery, we have some helpful tips for you this month. Grocery shopping doesn’t have to be hard.

Online Grocery Shopping in Canada

Suppose you can shop online. The fewer people that go into stores, the better. That’s what Public Health keeps telling us. Thankfully, there are lots of options. Many of the large stores have opened up to full-service grocery shopping online. Here, you can find all your household items and more.

However, it’s not just the major retailers that have stepped up. Many small businesses are also changing with the times. Have you checked in with your favourite local shops?

At Hilltop Acres, we have a full online ordering system. From there, you can choose your favourite items. Within 48 hours, it is ready for pickup. It’s as easy at that. Things are always changing, and we are trying to change with it. Who knows what the future has in store, but we are ready for it.

When grocery shopping online, keep a few things in mind:

  • Firstly, be sure to think ahead. Some places may be harder to secure time-slots. For us, the wait time is around 48 hours. However, some places may be more or less than that. Therefore, it’s best to plan.
  • Secondly, we want to remind you to be flexible. We may not always have what you’d like in stock. But, we will always do our best to get it for you. Some places might have issues securing stock. Or, limits will be put onto high-demand items. Keep in mind; this is to ensure everyone gets a chance.
  • Lastly, remember to search around. Shopping at big box stores might not be your only option. What’s available in your neighbourhood?

Farmers Markets

Farmer’s markets have always been a way to get fresh food. As a result, more people are turning to farmers’ markets to do their grocery shopping. Outdoor markets provide a safe place to shop. Of course, shopping might be different than it was before. Each market will have rules set in place. However, it is still a sufficient way to do your grocery shopping. Plus, you are supporting local farms. In turn, you are supporting your community.

When attending a farmers market, take the same precautions, you would if you were going into a grocery store. For example:

  • Stay home if you are sick.
  • Keep your distance! A minimum of six feet.
  • Go alone. Family members can stay at home this time.
  • Only touch what you intend to buy.
  • Rinse all food well when you get home. Avoid eating anything before this step. No matter how tempted you are!

Lastly, be kind to the vendors. This year has been hard on local farmers. They are doing their best to bring you fresh food. Keep in mind; prices could be higher this harvest. Yet, it is still often less than grocery shopping in large stores such as Walmart or Costco. Shop smart, and you will find you actually save some money in the long run.

Support Farmers in Ontario

Ontario Farmers by Hilltop Acres

Farmers in Ontario need your support more than ever. Do you know how to do your part? If you want to do more, try out one of these ideas:

Buy Meat in Bulk

Instead of buying meat piece by piece at the grocery store, invest in a large amount. In turn, you help support farmers in Ontario while stocking your freezer. Even better, it’ll save you some cash. Some farmers even give discounts for larger amounts. As a result, you will get a higher quality product at a lower price.

The only downfall is you need the space to store it. Not to mention, you may not want so much of one type. If that is a problem, your next best bet is to visit a local shop as we have at Hilltop Acres. We carry a variety of products from local farmers in Ontario. From our own products to our neighbours, you can count on quality.

Join a CSA

The term CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. So, what is it? And why do you want to join one? Well, it’s simple. When you buy a CSA share, you commit to a part of the crops from that season. Certainly, summertime is the best time for the items you receive. However, many farms offer winter shares as well. During the colder months, items usually include things like potatoes, onions, and carrots. It all depends on what they have in season or available from storage at the farm. Some farmers in Ontario keep a greenhouse all year round. Here, fresh greens are often found. You can find more information from CSA Farms.

Effective Grocery Shopping Habits

Aside from the tips we have given you for 2020, there are a few things you should always be doing, regardless of whether or not you are shopping from home.

  • Shop the essentials first. We suggest always having a variety of grains, proteins, and fresh vegetables. Plus, keep some canned or frozen veggies on hand for those quick dinners. That way, you are ready to make your main meals.

Fun Fact: If you are shopping in-store, avoid the middle aisles. Generally speaking, these are the aisles with processed foods. Stick to the edges of the store to avoid temptations.

  • Could you make a list and stick to it? This one seems obvious but is overlooked. By using a list, you stick to your plan. Additionally, you are less likely to forget an important item. Remember to check off things as you go!
  • Find the brands you like, and stick to it. Choosing the brands you trust will help save time. You know where they are, and you know what’s in them.
  • If you are shopping local, ask questions. Don’t be afraid to know where your food comes from. We love to talk about our food. But most importantly, we want you to love the food you get.
